This word gives many Americans a headache with its pronunciation and spelling. My favorite of the latter used to be advertised by a local motel bar/restaurant: "Every day 5 to 7: Hour Dovers".

It caught me on my blindside that the plural is added to the hors, so one doesn't have to add an "s" to the oeuvre. (As in crepes suzette).

There is a children's book called "Family Sabbatical" in which a family travels in Europe. There are a few good mis-translations, including hors d'oeuvres meaning 'various horses hooves'.

hors d'haleine adj. : 1. breathless adj. 2. winded adj.
hors de prix adj. : 1. priceless adj.
hors pair adj. : 1. unequaled adj. 2. unparalleled adj.
hors pareil adj. : 1. matchless adj.
hors série adj.inv. : 1. one-of-a-kind adj. 2. unparalleled adj. 3. unique adj. 4. extraordinary adj.

An opera overture might be called an hors d'oeuvre.
