This word gives many Americans a headache with its pronunciation and spelling. My favorite of the latter used to be advertised by a local motel bar/restaurant: "Every day 5 to 7: Hour Dovers".

What people don't know how to say horses overies? How else would you say it?

It caught me on my blindside that the plural is added to the hors, so one doesn't have to add an "s" to the oeuvre. (As in crepes suzette).

There is a children's book called "Family Sabbatical" in which a family travels in Europe. There are a few good mis-translations, including hors d'oeuvres meaning 'various horses hooves'.

An opera overture might be called an hors d'oeuvre.
