In 1348 Edward the III was dancing with the Countess of Salisbury when her garter fell off.

He picked it up and placed it on his own leg, saying to those present :

Honi soit qui mal y pense.

"Evil be to him who thinks evil of it."

It subsequently became the motto of the Order of the Garter, the highest order of English knighthood.

Can anyone give me the correct pronunciation of this motto?

"HON-EYE SO-IT KEY MELL E PEN-SEE" ?
