I tamed a wild rock about fifteen years ago. I carry it in my pocket most of the time, and always when I'm performing somewhere. I'm not in the least superstitious, I just like it. It is much, much smoother than when I first wrestled it to the ground.

Did you watch the movie Inception?
The plot was.... a team of highly skilled agents would enter the subconsciousness mind of a subject with the view of extracting and stealing valuable secrets while interacting in the 'dream' which was manipulated.
My point is.....each 'agent' would carry something personal that only they knew, that kept them grounded, so they would recognise what was 'real' or what was the manufactured 'dream'. Much like your pet rock in your pocket, Peter.

I've not seen inception yet.
But I know in rehab the 'chips" (coin-like)we give out
for 30 days, 2 months, etc. are carried like "talismans".
Native Americans had their "medicine bags".

Positive reinforcement. A person is given one for
24 hours sober/clean, then a month, 2 months, 3 months.
Then 1,2,3,etc. years. When given they are usually passed
around to everyone in the room, and these put their
karma, luck, prayers, etc. on it for the person, who
then may carry it in pocket, wallet etc. as inspiration
to keep sobriety. The ones in this site are for Alcoholics
Anonymous, but most of the 12 Step programs have them:
Gamblers Anon, Overeaters A., Computers Anon., Online Gamers
Anon., Shopaholics Anon., Narcotics A., Cocaine A., etc.

I have become addicted to an online jigsaw puzzle site (jigzone). So many variations for one puzzle - types of cuts, number of pieces etc. The onliest problem is dragging a piece really slows you down. In real life you would just pick it up, but then here you can choose cuts!!

Do the pieces all go in the same direction? Or do you have
to turn them around clockwise/counterclockwise to make
them fit?

Thanks for explanation Luke. Addiction must be a hard road to travel and any positive reinforcement must be good.

Two concepts fit addiction: "pre-occupation", and "compulsion".
If, eg., an alcoholic cannot wait for the 5 pm closing
bell so as to have a drink, that is pre-occupation.
"I'll just have one more" is compulsion. Both can equal
addiction.
