i just posted that bubba can be a term for grandmother.
What did (do) you call your grandparents?
I am nana, to my granddaughter, as my grandmother was nana to me, Her other grandmother is Lola, (the Tagalot term for the same).
My grandfather was Pop; he was Da to his own children.
What other terms -any unusually ones?
I only knew my maternal grandmother; she was Granny.
formerly known as etaoin...
Grandma and Grandpa for me, maternal and paternal. My first grandchild is still too young to talk. I'm toying with the idea of having him call me Maestra.
I only met my maternal grandmother once - I referred to her as "Grandma". Never knew my maternal grandfather. My father's mother was also "Grandma", although it was usually elided to "Gramma". My father's father was "Granda" - elided from "Grand-da", "da" being common in Ireland where we would say "dad". My father gets "Grampa", elided from "Grandpa" from his grandchildren.
My grandfathers both died when I was very young, and I called my paternal grandmother "Abuela", just "grandmother". My maternal grandmother, who lived with us for many years, received the pet shortened form "Abu".
My parents are "Mamá" and "Papá" for me, but interestingly my Mom is still "Baby" for her older brother, and my Dad is "Kid" for his older sister!
I grew up with both sets of grandparents and one set of great-grandparents still living, and except for my maternal grandmother (whom we called "Nanny"), all were addressed as Grandma or Grandpa (or, more precisely -- or is it, less precisely? -- Gramma or Granpa) and were distinguished by the addition of a version of their surname.
Sadly, I never knew any of my grandparents. My kids called their maternal grandparents Busia and Grandpa, and the paternal set Grammy and Papa. Their paternal great grandfather was Dziadzie (roughly, "jahjee").
