Doing today's cryptic in the NYT I have a couple that I think I have answers for but I'm not able to come up with a full rationale for them. Any comments?

I have _ _ N _ G _ T. The clue is "running into drunk this evening. I'm thinking T O N I G H T, where the T O N I is the 'into drunk' but I can't make the G H T mean anything.

The first T is the middle letter of G _ _ _ R clued 'swamp critter spat audibly' …

Nemmine. I just figured that one out.

Yep, I reckon you have it.

running into drunk this evening =
Join together in a compacted form (into drunk) (this evening) =
(anagram of ‘into’) + (alternative for ‘this evening’) =
(toni) + (night) =
toni[ni]ght

In other words, 'running' is supposed to suggest conjunction plus reduction: 'run ni'~ing!

And gator sounds like ("audibly") gaiter=spat as in spats, the things men put over their shoes eighty years ago

Thanks mav and wofa.

I had figured I had the wrong spat. It came to me as I was typing the question in.

Actually, I've not come across that particular conflation-with-overlap before in this context. Have I been out of the NYT Sunday Puzzles loop for too long, or did you just devise it? :-)

baring + ingest, for example, with appropriate cluing-->baringest ===> BAREST

No, I guess that's discarding the overlap. Not the same thing.

Here's one:

I think that "drunk" in this context means the letters are mixed up.
