I mentioned this in Hogwash® over at W&F, but not wanting to hijack the fun n games there, I'll repeat it here for discussion:
>>for whomever of these dilatory souls posts here
>Bad tsuwm. That should be whoever
Today is "Embrace You Geekiness Day." So don't be afraid to jump in with your whys and why-nots. Eddie Tricks (that would be moi) will explain her reasoning later.
Today is "Embrace Your Geekiness Day."
I embrace my geekiness! Yes! I have been a crypto-geek for too long! I celebrate my geekhood!
So, what's your opinion, Lizardbreath®? reference to a Canadian comic strip
Neither (just to be true to my name!)
Should be whomsoever :)
I'll go for whichever. Er, as a replacement, not as an option.
I am not sure, but this is what i think:
If you isolate the dependent clause, it would be "he (of the dilatory souls) posts here". Since whoever/whomever will be in place of "he" (nominative case) the pronoun will be whoever and not whomever.
Just between you and I it's what me and my buddy were saying the other day: It's another indication of the moribund status of case markers in modern English.
