came across this word:
dolichocephalic
in this article:
http://www.stonepages.com/news/archives/001318.html
and I noticed it was Greek and I-E combined. is this commonplace for these types of terms?

dol·i·cho·ce·phal·ic
Pronunciation Key (dl-k-s-flk) also dol·i·cho·ceph·a·lous (-sf-ls)

[Greek dolikhos, long; see del-1 in Indo-European Roots + -cephalic.]doli·cho·cepha·lism (-sf-lzm) or doli·cho·cepha·ly (-sf-l) n.

Oh, goody, I get to jump in before the pundits!

Greek is an IE language. AHD is simply pointing you back to the IE root (though why it didn't do the same for -cephalic I don't know).

OK, pundits. Have at.

So it won't display properly in Firefox?

I don't know about Firefox, but quite frequently Greek doesn't display properly in IE, expecially if you want the accents.

AnnaS sez: OK, pundits. Have at.

A pundit is a person who uses a long stick to propel the boat, right?

Because the reference to dolikhos takes one to the etymological appendix, while the reference to -cephalic takes one to a separate dictionary entry.
