In chemistry there are containers with "fritted glass" stoppers - with a very fine granular appearance, almost frosted-looking, very close-fitting to prevent evaporation.
Fine powders heated to fuse them together into a single mass, generally glass or metal, are called "sinters," and the process is sintering.

a few brain cells still work.
i remember sinter--it came up as a word 2 or 3 years ago--Oliver Sach's used it in his book "Uncle Tungsten" (his uncle tugnsten sintered fine tungsten wire for incandesent lamps)
several interesting words were gleaned from that book.
(and to total go off topic, i can't ever hear/use the word glean--with out thinking of glebe, another word in scant use.)

glebe, another word in scant use. ..unless you live in Ottawa, where a rather upscale shopping section of town is called "The Glebe" - for what reason I do not know.

I assume you know the origin of the word? ~ a plot of land typically linked to an Anglican rectory, provided with rights for the benefit of the incumbent. So it often, as communities grew, came to be a piece of lightly-utilised land in a high rent neighborhood, over which the less Christian brethren and sistren would cast covetous glances... The word comes from Latin for clod (via OF around 1300) - interesting comparison to the root of globe: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?term=glebe

yes, mav, i knew the word. the first house i lived in (as a married woman) was inside the old glebe of St. anne church, in the bronx --one of the older churches (outside of manhattan--The church still boasted an alter donated by queen Anne.
after the revolutionary war, (and seperation of church and state) the glebe was sold off. but the property line was still 'marked' by Glebe Avenue.
