What I meant was that the people who post to H-Net in the "intellectual history" strand of that list-serve are very much like us, AWADers, in that we are both interested in words. I must have expressed this notion very poorly to have so few understand and so many misunderstand. Alas. The article for which I provided a URL was all about this H-Net chat, and gave examples which were hauntingly like out own patter. Hmmm. Don't recall endorsing the NY Times any more than one who comments on the quality of the gravy is endorsing the boat in which it is served.

Padre, your style and interests remind me very much of another celebrated Episcopal priest, the incomparable Fr. Robert F. Capon, author of one of my favorite books, The Supper of the Lamb. Are your sure you're not a doppelgänger or alternate e-comm identity?

I am deeply honoured to be, in any way -- literary, culinary or spiritual -- to be compared with Robert. I had the great privilege of hosting him and his lovely bride for supper a few years back (and of sharing some really great cigars afterwards) and found him (them) to be as intersting, engaging, witty, bright, soulful, funny, learned and warm in person as he is in print. Thanks for what I take to be a great compliment.

"Its head is Latin while its tail is Greek."
I suppose then you could say that "retronym" is a chimeric neologism. It seems perfectly fair to me to allow mixing of Greek and Latin words, but I think it's against the law in Alabama. ;)

Sounds like somebody laundered money and made cents to me. [scuttling hastily in retreat icon]

Shhh! Only mention the word very, very quietly. We may be inviting a deluge from the great slippery cyclist in our midst ... [creeping away carefully emoticon]

Maybe no one else has noticed, but he doesn't seem to be in our midst anymore, either that or he's gone mute.

JazzO mentioned Maybe no one else has noticed, but he doesn't seem to be in our midst anymore, either that or he's gone mute.I had noticed. I keep hoping that his absence is only temporary, imposed by the demands of "real life."
