From this NZ Herald article: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/index.cfm?c_id=2&ObjectID=10118936

The wedding of the Prince of Wales was plunged into fresh crisis yesterday after Downing St was forced to deny it had lent on the royal couple to postpone the event.

Y'all down there use lent as the past tense of lean?

It's a 50/50 call, sometimes lent, sometimes leaned. My personal opinion would be that "lent" is slightly more common in spoken NZglish, maybe 60/40. I would normally write "leaned", probably because I would itch to write the other one "leant".

In fact, Vernon, I'm with you on that spelling. After all "learnt" isn't spelled "lernt". I think it's possible Fleet Street may have bungled that spelling. I'd probably say "leaned" as the simple past, and "had leant" for the perfect.

Thanks for the support, Elizabeth. Perhaps I can return the favour by mentioning that there's a "w" missing fron your homepage address in your profile?

Looks to me like it was Sheep Street in Zild what did the bungling.

I am not sure how well NZ you know, Annastrophic, but 75% of the country would cheerfully disown the soulless void whence spews forth the NZ Herald. We will cheerfully join in mocking the inadequacies of Auckland, for they are legion.

That raises a thought in my creaky ol' mind.
What is the diffeernce between "they are legion" and "their name is legion."
Is there a special way one phrase should be used as opposed to another - in certain circumstances?
Just wondering......

"Legion" is an inappropriate term for Auckland's inadequacies. It'd take the entire army ...

When I read the quote I had to read it over two or three times because I thought Downing Street had loaned money on the happy couple. And all I could think was, "What kind of lousy collateral is THAT?" I might lend money on the crown jewels, but not on Charlie's jewels.
