In the mondern context of hypocrite, I don't think it would apply to Insearchof's jewellry box. I think masquerade is better. It doesn't have the same negative connotation that hypocrite does now.
But, I'd use masquerade more for a human being, not for an object.

I was just trying to draw a comparison between a jewelry box with a plain facade and jewels inside, and a jewelry box with a fancy facade and no jewels inside.
Who is it of whom the adage says: "He knows the price of everything and the value of nothing"? Probably a hypocrite.
P.S. Turns out, the adage condemns a "cynic", not a hypocrite. But a cynic is a hypocrite. That's how come he's a cynic.

I have heard such a device referred to as a "keepsafe" which, while it does not convey the sense of disguise, is a term used by people who consult on issues of private security.
