actually those things that medical people put on the chest and run some kind of electric charge through to get the heart going?

Thanks. I just had a student ask and I didn't know, but told him I'd have the answer in thirty minutes here, guaranteed. (I hope!!)

Owlbow has it right, but the part that actually goes on the chest is called a paddle. There are two of 'em. And a body jerks a bit when hit by the charge, but normally not like shown on TV, where you often see the body sort of jumping off the gurney.
