You've really got Dr. Bill's attention with this 'plasticity' thread, tsuwm. He thinks teflon should be mentioned:
From Dr. Bill [wwh]:
Teflon -- makes an insulating material for electrical wiring that makes possible greatly more efficient electric generators and motors. The tiny motors we have today would not be possible without it. And todays big generators have several times the output of fifty year old generators the same size and weight.

Thank Doc Bill, Plutarch, for the ever-new Humpty Dumpty quotation. It should be posted on Awad each time a dreaded proscriptionist gets in a snit.

Not to be alarmist, but I once hear that Teflon pans should be thrown away as soon as there's any visible rip in the material--that bits of Teflon in your body can adversely affect your health.
Of course, there are those who would never cook with Teflon as a matter of principle, but I'm just mentioning what I heard once. I have no earthly idea whether it was true or not.
It was very interesting to read, by the way, from Dr. Bill's information the necessity of Teflon in small motors. Cool.

Dr. Bill sent me a PM with this sparkplug thought: is the shift of the word grip from luggage to TV camera jockey an example of plasticity of words? (Thanks, Dr. Bill.)
