Several years ago we lived in a house built in 1753 and the walls were insulated with horse hair. In one room with a north facing wall, water would seep onto the wall from the outside when the gutters were frozen. It smelled pretty bad. I wonder if crinoline wearers took special care to stay out of the rain?
