I've always called it a "radical."

This reminds me of the four fours game where you try to make all the numbers using exactly four fours in any combination and the basic mathematical operations.

44 - 44 = 0
44/44 = 1
4/4 + 4/4 = 2
(4+4+4)/4 = 3
4 * (4-4)/4 = 4
and so on.
