yes, jheem, the baseball season is about to start or end.. (that is if you define the season as the yankee's playing in the world series Vs someone else.)
for eons now, the Boston red sock think they can define the baseball season, but alas, like fall in Texas is nothing like fall in Vermont, its just a quaint idea that the boston red socks might some day win the world series.
this year proves to be more interesting than most, since there is a chance (albeit a small one) that they will sweep the final 4 games (the yankees won the first 3) and actually make it past the play offs, (something they have done before, althought not frequently) and make it to the world series were they will ineventiabley lose.
the games have been interesting, several running into many extar innings (14!) and closely played.
tonight, is the final match up in the bronx-- and hearts will be broken. we NY won't take it too bad if we lose, (it will be disappointing, but not a heartbreaking loss) but boston fans will be devastated.(again!)
if boston does defy the odds, and win, they have only postponed the heartbreak for a week or two.
its actually interesting to watch baseball this time of year. all the boring part is over.
its is a bit morbid, like watching a train wreck or waiting and watch for a volcano to explode... you know the ending is going to be tragic, (the red socks are involved) its only a matter of time (tonight? or next week) and degree.

>How many teams play in the world series?
Two, and this year one of them will be the SOX. A truly remarkable achievement, never before managed in baseball and only twice in Nth American pro sports (ice hockey). Even as an outsider, seeing the Red Sox come from behind to win four in a row against the bloated plutocrats and force their way into the World Series was immensely gratifying. A proud day for the non-rhotic among us.

Arnold Rothstein Who is that, please?Arnold Rothstein was a famous gangster who taught the likes of Meyer Lansky and Lucky Luciano that organized crime was a business and that ethnic rivalries should be checked at the boardroom doors like revolvers and tommy guns. Mr Rothstein fixed the 1919 world series which involved a team called the White Sox (though it became known as the Black Sox Scandal) against the Cincinnati Reds. The "Black Sox" threw the game, though they were the favorites. Lots of money changed hands. More on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnold_Rothstein

"Batter up!"
I don't first think that the pancakes are ready. Instead, I see the waitress being called to from the kitchen. The batter is ready for that eccentric customer who likes his pancakes uncooked. She, upon hearing, "Batter up!", takes the bowl out front to the eccentric.
Yes, indeed. I think all of that before ever in this lifetime considering a bat and ball.

Rumor has it they were known as the Black Sox, not from their throwing of the Series, but from one of the aspects of their differences with Comiskey, the owner. Comiskey didn't feel that it was the resonsibility of the team do do the players' laundry. The players disagreed and consequently the laundry didn't get done. There was also the matter of Comiskey's alleged reneging on a bonus agreement with one of the pitchers. It was these and other differences that made the players an easy target for the gamblers' bribe offers.

They did win. But I'm still not clear what this world series is all about or whether they ever play in anything else. I can't believe they've been playing for 86 years or whatever and never won a match - they would surely have got the hint after 40 odd losses? Strange. And why is it a 'world' series? There must be some odd history behind this, perhaps it's worth a Google. Well - maybe tomorrow.

no doubt you've seen the stories of 90 year old men (and women) in the boston area, who claim, they are hanging onto life, in order to see the red soxs win... (i wonder if this fall the death rate will rise in New England/boston area this fall?)
but who knew yasser arfat was a red sox fan?

There seems to be no evidence to support this hypothesis and some that argues against it.

they have only postponed the heartbreak for a week or two. Nya nyah nyah nyah...... We WON - four in a row - a shutout. Live with it!!!!! Giddy with joy! About three million turned out for the parade. It was a "Rolling Rally" as the team members paraded through Boston streets in Duck Boats then took the water of the Charles River so even more fans could yell and applaud. Whhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!!!!!!!!! We love our Red Sox!

Not only did they sweep the Series, they were never behind during the entire series and were never behind from the end of the eighth inning of game 5 of the ALCS.
