This morning in Sunday School, a lady was telling how her son had had this stomach virus earlier in the week, and that she had come down with it Friday...and then she came and sat RIGHT NEXT TO ME TO TALK !!!!

No responses needed: I just needed to vent. I'll delete this in a couple of days.

...and then she came and sat RIGHT [ DOWN ] NEXT TO ME TO TALK !

Now now, Jackie, we all make mistakes.

Like, for example, you left out the word "down" in your post.

A reader up north might mistakenly think that the germ-carrying woman had sat down in the pew
right next to you and not to the left of you but on your immediate right.
The northern dictionaries, you see, don't carry the definition of "right" that means "close up".

Don't thank me.

Thanks, you-all. I actually debated with myself whether to put the word in. Guess I won't delete my post, now. I'll up-chuck-I-mean-date in a couple of days.

I say that Jackie's meaning was clear to any speaker of Standard American English, i.e., meaning four under the heading adverb in the following AH entry:

Exactly or just.

Sorry to hear about your stressing situation, Jackie.

Inselpeter, you and jheem must stay current. Don't you two remember the hit folk song that was popular in the folk revival of the sixties...

Walk right in, set right down.
Daddy let your mind roll on
.

Note they didn't say...

Walk exactly in, set exactly...[blank].

Get with it guys, keep current.

Everbody's talking about a new way of walking
Do you want to lose your mind?
walk right in step right down.
Daddy let you mind roll on.

The Prescriptivist Trio, 1962

But right is modifying next in Jackie's story and not in as in your song lyrics. Different adverb, but you knew that, right? Sorry, themilum, better luck next time.

Walk right in, set right down.

Obviously, right is a noun here. Walk can be either a transitive or intransitive verb, but set is only transitive. Therefore the directive is to set the right down. So it must be that the first part of the line is directing the listener to walk the right into the (building, room, area).

Jackie, I think you should immediately take vitamin C, two aspirins, a sick day and a hot rum toddy just in case.
And grab a couple of guilty pleasure movies to make sure the cure is successful.

The lyrics I remember:

Walk right in, set right down,
Baby, let your hair hang down.

Probably a different group's recording, or is it a second verse?

But, Faldage--set is a well-known southeron mispronunciation of the word sit.
I think.
Or it might be a shortening of the term "set yourself" which would make it fitin to your set of rules better.

FTR: I have escaped getting sick, this time. Whew. I hate it when sick people breathe on me! And she did, still green around the gills--leaned in good and close, since she didn't want to be overheard.

Now here are some meaningful lyrics...
WALK RIGHT IN
Rooftop Singers

Walk right in, set right down
Daddy let your mind roll on
Walk right in, set right down
Daddy let your mind roll on
Ev'rybody's talkin' 'bout a new way o' walkin'
Do you wanna lose your mind?
Walk right in, set right down
Daddy let your mind roll on

Walk right in, set right down
Baby let your hair hang down
Walk right in, set right down
Baby let your hair hang down
Ev'rybody's talkin' bout' a new way o' walkin'
Do you wanna lose your mind
Walk right in, set right down
Baby let your hair hang down

Walk right in, set right down
Daddy let your mind roll on
Walk right in, set right down
Daddy let your mind roll on
Ev'rybody's talkin' 'bout a new way o' walkin'
Do you wanna lose your mind?
Walk right in, set right down
Daddy let your mind roll on
Daddy let your mind roll on

All RIGHT, Jackie! Glad you didn't get the bug, whatever it was...And thanks for finding those lyrics. I was wondering if I had lost my mind, want to or not.
