The funny thing about this is that Spanish orthography is rather simple and makes sense phonologically. But, Languagehat's observation about what the grammar police would do once they got a taste of power is spot on. Issue Strunk & White to the masses and place descriptivists in distant camps where they cannot corrupt the youth in their grammar. Piffle!
