while visiting in Iowa, we went to the Mississippi River Museum in Dubuque. we listened to a presentation(recorded) about Lewia and Clark. Sacagawea was mentioned, but what struck me was the pronuciation: Sah-kah-gah-wee-ah. I had always grown up hearing it Sack-ah-jah-wee-ah.
any thoughts?
on a side note, my wife and I had an interesting discussion about regional history. I grew up on the Great Plains, she in New England. she remembered hearing about Sacagawea probably once, while I had never heard of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys...
formerly known as etaoin...
The controversy over how to pronounce (as well as to spell) her name is what prompted me to start calling the gold dollar coin the Pompey, after her infant son, who is also on the obverse of the coin. Pompey wasn't his name, though that's what Clark called him.
I still think Pompey's a good name for the coin. "I'll see your half and raise you a Pompey." "I left a couple of Pompeys as a tip, and the waitress loved 'em."

On vacation years ago I took way up in the White Mtns. I read a very long book on Sacagawea - I most remember a description of her walking through a rainbow . Amazing.
