for some reason, today's #3 word at OneLook® is 'trepidacious', which (as noted here previously) should prolly be spelled 'trepidatious', if it has to be spelled at all. http://www.onelook.com/wotd.shtml

Uh huh. So why'd they use both spellings in the same article? Perry: “Yeah. Yeah. I'm a little trepidatious about the future. And you know, what's in store business-wise, I suppose.”
Couric: “Are you scared?”
Perry: “But see, I chose trepidatious.”
Couric: “Okay, sorry.”
Perry: “I'm trying to sound smart.”
Couric: “I try to use easier, monosyllabic words.”
Perry: “Yeah, see, I even put glasses on for this.”
After "Friends," you can still expect to see Matthew making occasional cameos on "The West Wing.” This spring he co-stars in "The Whole Ten Yards," and next year he'll star in a movie with his dad. Yes, they're playing father and son. But if Matthew Perry's still “trepidacious,” here's why.

Google hits: 485 for trepidacious; 2,190 for trepidatious. Onelook hits: Sorry, no dictionaries indexed in the selected category contain the word trepidatious; We found one dictionary with English definitions that includes the word trepidacious. Guess whose it was?!

yep, back when it first appeared as wwftd I used the -cious spelling because that's what VR used in their "Worst Words" list. I plan to update the index so as to not depend on OneLook's spelling guess.

What is the difference in meaning between trepid and trepidatious? What does to trepidate mean?

Then I'd vote for trepid because more pompous asses (viz. the candlemaker) would think it not a word and opt for trepidatious. Intrepidatiously, jheem.
