...an event that skeptics believe is fixed.

Nooo. Surely not!

Sounds like a fun occasion Jackie - were you there?

It is a lot of fun, but no, I wasn't there. Tickets to be on the Belle--and being on a boat is the only way to go, for this, though I suppose a picnic on the riverbank could fill in the wait time (steamboats aren't exactly speedboats)--were $125.
I just thought maybe some people might be interested in this story, as steamboats are quite rare nowadays.
Possibly next year I could have an up-close-and-personal view. A friend of ours bought a boat last Saturday. My husband and son went with him, for company; they drove clear to St. Louis--300 miles from here--to pick it up.

Thanks for the link, Jackie. Nicely written and peppered with humor - not an easy feat with three writers.
Hope you make the "escort" next year.
Which horse are you favoring in the Race For The Roses?

Um--[gentle correction e]--it's the run for the roses; but only natives and horse-people should be expected to know that. I like Smarty Jones--not only is it a cute name, he's undefeated. (He's named after his owner's mother--it was her nickname.) But I'll also be pulling for Imperialism--his trainer's not only a female, but also just 21 years old. He could be a real dark horse, heh. I think this story about her is neat; not too many people in the U.S. can count a sheik as a personal friend.
