Edited to add consuelo's votea. (n.) A functionary of lower rank than a chamberlain, but discharging some of his duties. Attendant at the king’s bedchamber; responsible for domestic security, organizing ceremonies (including religious ones), processionals and local travel. Called also sogennant-at-arms; an attendant of the serjeant-at-arms. [dxb] b. [Penn. Dutch] ironic [tsuwm](sjmaxq, capfka, AnnaStrophic) c. Characterized by a gloomy, oppressive atmosphere.[faldage](TEd, Fiberbabe, tsuwm) d. having the characteristics of a sponge [musick] (W O'N) e. mosslike [W O'N](belMarduk, dxb) f. of solo quality or effect, yet produced by an ensemble [wordwind] (rhuby, etaoin, consuelo) g. of, relating to, or arising from one's mental or spiritual being, visceral, intuitive [consuelo](musick) h. so called [true meaning, sjmaxq, jheem, and AnnaS.](faldage, boronia, jheem, jackie) i. stagnant [mainly Scottish] {bingley] j. unflappable, stoic [fiberbabe] I had never heard of this word before I met it here: http://www.atrium-media.com/rogueclassicism/2004/03/17.html (Scroll down to Nuntii: The Roman Warm Period) I'm not sure how many Classicists are aware of the sogennant 'Roman Warm Period', but a study reviewed by the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change might be worth tracking down. Sogennant is not in OneLook, and most of the Google hits were in German. When I asked for English-only results from Google, there was only a handful of results. Max then supplied the correct definition but spelling it sogenannt, which is in OneLook, and has a lot more google hits going for it. But all those hits (or at least those on the google pages I looked at) are in German. So is German sogenannt in the process of being anglicised as sogennant? Bingley

were we ever to get back to an actual scoring mode, I wouldn't accept both a correct definition and a vote for the correct answer; only one or the other as ASp and max did. (okay jheem? :) BTW, thanx for the votes ASp and max!

And do you get credit for people who voted for your definition? I mean, you didn't fool anybody.

well, Faldo, I think it's a well-established practice to vote for your "favorite" bluff, as an option.

chopped liver?! of course not; he would be more along the lines of tessellated spleen. be that as it may, he was omitted because he didn't belong to the class (of those who also submitted the correct definition or thereabouts hi max! .

Which I usually do, not having any idea what the true definition attually® is. But if one guesses correctly, or, as has been the case with me only twice (the other was sweven*), knows the correct definition, then one gets points for choosing that definition from the field.
*Sweven was really only a highly educated guess, my knowing the OE swefn.

I see it's the same in Hogwash as it is in US presidential elections. The voter just doesn't bloody-well count. It all depends on how well connected you are. Bah! Humbug!

no argument there, F.; the onliest issue is whether a person should get bonus points for knowing the word; i.e., by submitting the correct def'n and then voting for it as well. I believe this is implicitly covered by the long lost roolz. --- well, they aren't quite that long lost: http://wordsmith.org/board/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=wordplay&Number=29261

In my PM to Bingley, I wrote that I knew the definition, which I cited. I never sent in a definition before the definitions were posted, so I guess I'm disqualified. I'll take my zero now, as it's a most perfect, unspoiled score.

Will do. Later today. Do I PM folks soliciting definitions? or do I start a thread and wait for them to PM me?

jheem, the game is open to everyone. You couldn't PM every member, because you (we) don't know who every member is!
(granted, there is a core of 'Usual Gang of Idiots' that responds, but.)

Added to which, we are far too anarchic to form a "Gang"

So is German sogenannt in the process of being anglicised as sogennant? You mean, misspelling a German word facilitates its adoption by Anglophones ? (it makes it look less German) No, seriously, I don't see any reason to adopt this word into English, since it is an exact synonym of so-called, and not even shorter.

I have to agree with wsieber. And for what it's worth, I've never seen/heard it used in English. Maybe soi-disant, but never sogenannt. I learned it early on in studying German, either from an instructor or in a movie.
