OP Again, some definitions were contributed by more than one person, so I have amalgamated them:
a. (n.) A functionary of lower rank than a chamberlain, but discharging some of his duties. Attendant at the king’s bedchamber; responsible for domestic security, organizing ceremonies (including religious ones), processionals and local travel.
