Now that we are all acutely aware of the obsolete meaning, are any of us less likely to use "I don't give a fig" in the future?

About as likely, I, as to have used it in the past...or maybe a smidge more.

And here I sit trying to ideate a cross between a mint plant and a fig tree. I guess you could say it's an imagination of my fig mint.

a mint plant

One of the etymologies proposed for the Latin mentula 'penis' is the diminutive of minta 'mint'. Another derives it from mentum 'chin' and relates it to mons 'mountain'.

imagination of my fig mint

A fig mint can't have any imagination, TEdRem.

Still, it's a damn good pun.

A "fig mint" is appetizing to my imagination, but it is not something I would want to eat.

I searched for "mentula" and found a bunch of choice items:

I wonder if Jay Leno knows "leno" is "pimp" in Latin.

"mentula" to me suggested "little mind". You have to admit
it seems to have a mind of its own. Penis erectus conscientiam non habet.

I think that's what Faldage has in mind, wwh.

I hope you won't look for a double entendre ... 'cause I'm trying to play it straight.

Bill, you must be careful of the quality of these insults. For example, Impudens es leno means literally "I pimp, you are shameless." Leno 'to pimp, pander' is a verb and not a noun. Nouns for pimp are: lenullus (related to leno) and perductor. Lector caveat!

I wish others took as much care with the quality of their insults as I take with the quality of mine.

There is nothing wrong with the quality of your insults, jheem, but one can make a fault out of perfection, you know.
