Redmond also found that names such as Godelena, Helwise, Idony, Avice and Dionisia were more popular than some of the names now considered traditional, such as Mary. Miss Thomas Aquinas? My daughter is very grateful that I vetoed my husband's choice for her name: Guinevere.

My housemate's parents had neat reasons for naming their kids as they did. One boy looked a lot like father when he was born, and was named Troy, for True Reminder Of You. My housemate is named Lavinia, not after the character in Titus Andronicus, but because her parents combined their own names - Larry and Virginia (they didn't even know that Lavinia was a real name).

The variants that I found listed for Cornelius are Corny and Corney. I'd rather be a Connie than a Corney meownself BTW, both my sisters have names that can go either way as well...Christy and Kelli. Kelli married a Kelley and for the life of us we can't think of a better way to refer to them (at least one that will stick!) than Kelli girl and Kelley boy.

As to boy's names becoming girl's names (espec in the Middle Ages - there was a fashion amongst the great and the good for calling their daughters by masculine names. Dunno why!)- you've all missed the one right under your noses! My given name is Hilary but I am most certainly masculine, as those of us gathered here who've met me will attest. EDIT:Do you remeber the debate over my sex when I first joined the board? I had great fun with that!

My parents knew two couples named Lavergne and Shirley. In one case the Lavergne was male and the Shirley female and in the other case the Lavergne was female and the Shirley male. I know four couples with a Terry as half of the couple, two male and two female.

We had friends of the family named Gene and Carrol - phonetically, neither name is gender-specific, so they were always being mis-identified. In this case, Gene was the woman and Carrol was the man. [Their son had a boat called the "Dagny Taggart", which was my first knowledge of the Atlas Shrugged context of my name - so I'll never forget them!]

Many years ago I was casually acquainted with a guy who was a sports writer for one of the DC papers, the Post, probably. His name was Shirley Povich. Heck of a nice guy.
I also hung around a crowd in which there was a lady named Shirly who was extremely well-endowed, and was known to many of us as Shirley You-Jest.
