We had friends of the family named Gene and Carrol - phonetically, neither name is gender-specific, so they were always being mis-identified. In this case, Gene was the woman and Carrol was the man. [Their son had a boat called the "Dagny Taggart", which was my first knowledge of the Atlas Shrugged context of my name - so I'll never forget them!]

Also, I've got both male and female friends named Dana...

Many years ago I was casually acquainted with a guy who was a sports writer for one of the DC papers, the Post, probably. His name was Shirley Povich. Heck of a nice guy.

I also hung around a crowd in which there was a lady named Shirly who was extremely well-endowed, and was known to many of us as Shirley You-Jest.
