I was pronouncing in me noggin as /diyOt/, so it doesn't rhyme with /Idiy@t/. Slightly assonant.

The variants that I found listed for Cornelius are Corny and Corney.

or the much more common Neal. every neal i knew was hiding a Cornelius. (and a surprize.. a very italian Patty, was really a Pasquale. --confirmation required you to state your baptizimal name.. and the truth came out!)
(so sayeth Helen Mary Bernadette Patricia)

As to boy's names becoming girl's names (espec in the Middle Ages - there was a fashion amongst the great and the good for calling their daughters by masculine names. Dunno why!)
- you've all missed the one right under your noses!
My given name is Hilary but I am most certainly masculine, as those of us gathered here who've met me will attest.

EDIT:
Do you remeber the debate over my sex when I first joined the board? I had great fun with that!

My parents knew two couples named Lavergne and Shirley. In one case the Lavergne was male and the Shirley female and in the other case the Lavergne was female and the Shirley male. I know four couples with a Terry as half of the couple, two male and two female.

Laurie used to be a standard nickname for Lawrence.

I know in English Carol can be both male and female. In French it is only a female name.
