What is the name of the stringed instrument one of the band members played in which his hand appeared to be turning around and around at one end of the instrument? I didn't see the Academy Awards, so this description comes to you second hand.

sounds like a form of psaltery, dub-dub.

I have seen versions where the handle turns a rosined leather-covered-wheel. Strings are then psuhed onto the whell by a lever operated by something similar to a piano key board.
I've also seen a version where the player's finger is used to depress the string.

that pretty well describes the hurdy-gurdy, Rhuby. I hadn't realized the two were related. but then, I guess I didn't really know what a psaltery is.
I'm sure I'll get peppered for that...

Thyme out! You mustard stop this stuff or it'll appear that we've tartar friends to not appreciate us. I guess not -- just another way to curry coals to Newcastle.

Of course before that Academy Awards there were the Golden Clove Awards, though I noted that the dancers didn't have a category -- no clove hoofers award, though perhaps one will be cumin out later.

HURDY GURDY MAN

Donovan

Thrown like a star in my vast sleep
I open my eyes to take a peep
To find that I was by the sea
Gazing with tranquillity.
'Twas then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love,
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Came singing songs of love.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Histories of ages past
Unenlightened shadows cast
Down through all eternity
The crying of humanity.
'Tis then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Comes singing songs of love,
Then when the Hurdy Gurdy Man
Comes singing songs of love.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang.
Here comes the roly poly man and he's singing songs of love,
Roly poly, roly poly, roly poly, poly he sang.
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang,
Hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy, gurdy he sang
