It had escaped me that Yahoo's search engine was powered by Google; well, that's soon to change as Yahoo unveils its own technology. Meanhile Google's page index has hit 6 billion (a page per person!):

Interesting!

I hope their anti-spam technology works better on their search engine than it does on my e-mail address. I'm beginning to suspect that they actually sell my address to spammers.

I've gone on a crusade again. Something about my spam protection has slipped, these last couple of weeks. So I right-click on them, copy the domain name into the address box of an on-line window, and have it search. So far it's found them all, though in one case my only clue was down at the bottom of the page it found: "This site is powered by XYZ...", and I had to go find XYZ before I could get to a 'Contact Us' button. Then I copy the Message Source page so they have the headers, and ask them to stop the person. Usually it's been from some sort of feel-good, free e-mail place.

I have a feeling I'll be a distant voice in the wilderness, but for the nonce (hi, tsuwm!) it makes me feel better to think that I'm fighting back in some small way. Oh, and I give them my "public" e-mail address, not my real one.

It is also worthwhile to forward unsolicited commercial spam to uce@ftc.gov where the feds can do something about it.

I just got yet another spam message, from a domain of a non-English-speaking country. If only the part I made bold were true!

"The **** FreeMail Service has been moved on a new hardware machine with a redundant storage system and having a much increased access speed. We hope the interruptions we have been forced to do during the last days will eventually be for the benefit of all our users."

Dear Jackie: the writer obviously meant "the last few days".
But if you're going to Spam, you mustn't make such mistakes.

With regard to Google, the new task bar for search entry
makes use of Google much more convenient.

According to the little counter on the tool bar, my new Google pop-up blocker has prevented 677 unwanted obtrusive adverts from darkening my screen. Heh, heh, heh. I could rearrange the bar to omit the counter, but I love the sense that I am thwarting some uninvited rogue advertiser every time the counter clicks.

I am surprised to find that the sponsors of pop-up ads
think it is good business to make people angry.

I am surprised that people are stupid enough to click on a pop-up ad...

Dear Inselpeter: I tried to send this as a PM, but got a goofy error message that I hadn't filled in the "To" field.
Dear IP: I used to use only the Yahoo search box, because it was so convenient. Then a few days ago, while I was using
Google because I could not access Yahoo, an announcement appeared offerint an additional task bar, in which Google
search box would always be in view, and as an added benefit,
pop-ups would be blocked. I don't know if there is a way
to get Google to offer you the little program, but you could sniff around and see if you can find out how to sign up. I think it is very handy. Bill

Again, wordsmith gave goofy error message, wouldn't send PM
Dear IP: I went into www.google.com, saw line "Services
and Tools". clicked on it, and scroll way down almost to
bottom, and found a place where you can download the toobar,
which is added just below the Address bar. The anti-pop-up
is part of it. Bill

I too tried to send a PM to inselpeter but got a strange page of raw HTML with an error message about not filling out the To: field. Strange.

Dear jheem: thanks for posting that. I had "finis" as Today's Word for over a week, and got told it was because
I had too many cookies. It kept up after I deleted all cookies. But I enjoy AWADtalk too much to complain.

Proving quite conclusively "cookies" are not the problem.

People use spamming techniques because (1) the cost is negligible and (2) it works. Even if less than 1/1000th of 1% answer, there's still a lot of money to be made.

The only thing I can figure on my end is I need to clear out my mail box, which I will do soon as I can. I think I respond to anyone who writes but, since this is out here in public (which is fine, not complaining), please know that I seem always to have gotten the messages people wonder about -- and usually, I've gotten several copies. Best 2 All. IP

Look at the reply I just got; I'll X out the identifying info. Way cool!

The login name Alura for the free mail accounts is no longer in the database, the account was most likely erased the other day when I went through and deleted a bunch of free webmail accounts that were registered all by one person(Over 200 accounts) I can only assume they were intended to be used for spam so deleted them and all blocked the IP address of the person who did the mass sign-ups.

I am sorry that you were inconvienced, and hope you understand that the spam wasn't sent from me directly, I am against SPAM and try everything in my power to prevent it. If you are bothered by spammers again in the future using a XXX.com email address, please let me know and I will remove them and ban that persons IP.

Thank you for your understanding.

Sincerely,
