Dear Bingley: what I know about ophthalmology, you could put in your eye without discomfort. I finally found a definition of amaurosis which said only that it is blindness caused by a central lesion, with normal eyes.
I could find nothing about degrees thereof.

Dunno, sounds clear as a bell to me. And accurate, too. I guess it's not purely an Aussie phenomenon after all! I'll translate it for you if you want, but somehow I get the sense that that's not really what you're asking...
