For thousands of years the harness put on draft horses
pressed on their trachea, choking them. Sometime in the
Middle Ages, better collars were developed. Seldom seen
now, a typical horse collar has two curved halves that
put the pressure where it is readily tolderated. Each
half is a "hame".
