New Zealand, being settled somewhat later than other parts colonial, seems to have inherited an even balance of English, American and assorted European geographic terms. As a geological microcosm of the world, we have cols and traverses, forks and springs, divides and moraines, passes and gaps, cwms and cirques, ridges and ledges, geysers and hot pools, streams, creeks, rivers, gullies, gorges, valleys ad infinitum.
