In the O.Henry story, of which the title is in the Subject box, a former slave must decide whether to give the watch he brings with him to the wearer of the blue tie, or to the wearer of the black tie. In glancing down through it, I never saw another mention of the Carterets. But that is of no consequence; the true heir to the watch has to be Mr. Blue-tie. Black-Tie wheeled around to his desk, wrote in a check-book and tore out the check ... (and) laid the check within easy reach of Miss De Ormond's hand.
