What happened to Max's "hints" page? The link no longer works. If it has moved, might it not be a good thing to edit the fixed post to reflect the new URL?

Tips for new members: Please do not post here?

The idea of selective freedom of speech is oxymoronic, and in a public domain message forum, ridiculous.

A democratic plurality of voices is both the best and the worst thing about the Internet, and by taking a precious, exclusionary attitude you are only going to chill it.

I appreciate that veteran members must get frustrated when newcomers blunder rudely in upon the community you have established, but if these offending newcomers are malignancies, then your attitude is as harmful to the numbers of other newcomers as radiation is to healthy tissue.

Or do you mean, "please do not post your tips for new members here" ?

No, Ulrich, we've always tried to keep an exceptionally welcoming attitude on this board. Thanks for pointing out the ambiguity here - an important ambiguity! The intention was to try to simply keep this one thread clear of conversation to avoid confusion of its 'welcome, newcomers' intention.

Can I suggest someone with a few monemts to attend to this does a revised version again? (sorry, v busy just now or would do it)

Ok.

Righteous indignation could have waited until a simple query had been answered.

But stet.

Better I look ridiculous that commit the fraud of an ex post facto post edit.

I can prep a new newcomers thread. It'll be up shortly.

Jackie - can you sticky the new thread, please?

You may want to work with my upsidedown bro, 'cause you know you'll never hear the end of complaints if you mantle him... ;)

Who would complain? Heck, I go out of my way to thank people for mantling me. That's how nice* I am.

Awwright--you two decide on which post I should make stick; or come up with a new one. Something, anyway.

What are you doing if you "mantle" someone?

To mantle someone is to say what they've already said without crediting them and as though you said it first.

It comes from the mantle of invisibility. The usage was taken from the wordorigins message board. I forget where it was from ultimately, probably some old folk tale device.
