One of the Popes compelled the German King Henry (I forget his number) to do penance at Canossa, in very humiliating manner. But Henry was later able to get revenge, but driving the pope into exile. So a canossa is a situation which humiliates the victim. But those who plan them should remember what happened to the Pope.
