ahimsa
Noun 1. ahimsa - a Buddhist and Hindu and especially Jainist doctrine holding that all forms of life are sacred and urging the avoidance of violence
Dear Doc
It might interest you to know that the word comes from the 'Sanskrit' root 'himsa', meaning violence, and the a- prefix, as in many Indo-European languages, negates it. The negative, again as is usual in English, does not mean anti- or opposed to it, as much as renouncing it. Similarly, amoral means someone or some act, that has no morals, as opposed to immoral which means against that which is moral.
