Meum est propositum in taberna mori,
Ut sint vina proxima morientis ori;
Tunc cantabunt laetius angelorum chori:
"Deus sit propitius huic potatori."
My ignorant attempt at translation:
My plan is to die in a tavern
So that wine shall be close to the dying man's mouth
Then the choir of angels will sing
"Let God bless these drunkards"
I didn't translate it before, hoping a member who knows
far more Latin than I do would save me from displaying
my ineptitude. There was a German translation. Maybe another
peek at that will help me correct some of my guesses.
[Carmina Burana Nr. 191, 13. Jahrhundert]
Imagine my chagrin at finding the translation in one of
Wordsmith's letter!
My proposal is to die in the tavern
Where the wine will be near my dying mouth;
Then choirs of angels will quite happily sing,
"May God be propitious to this drunkard!"
