Once again my reputation exceeds me.

And if you think I'm going to say it's 23 across, you've got a nother think coming.

The clue's answer was "nit", as in picker. That was the Faldage reference.

I wonder how many members hav ever seen a nit. For a guess it would take twenty of them to equal volume of a single rice kernel, and they are almost pale skin color. They used to be quite common, but I think are now rather uncommon.
It is a head louse egg, and it has the most amazing tight
tubular attachement to he hair, at an angle of almost 45 degrees that makes them difficult to remove. It used to be necessary to have a comb with very fine teeth that the nits could not be passed through, but would be drawn all the way to the end of the hair if the attachment did not break.
I found many sites for shampoos that ought to be better than the one I used to prescribe. And combs too.
So today nitpickers have trouble finding anything more meaningful to do than make a big fuss about other people's
tiny errors.

unfortunately, head lice are alive and well, and many an urban school has become infested! (NYC school system (over 1.1 million students!) has enough head lice outbreaks that there is at least 1 full time professional nit picker! (there was an article in the times last year, and i think there was a link to the story posted too.)

One might think that the origin of the expression "nitwit" is in comparing the brain of a disparaged person with the tiny brain of Pediculus humanus. Not so, the more likely derivation is from the German or Dutch meaning "no brain" or "not brainy."

Dear of troy: you remind me of having a girl who sat behind me having a wood tick drop onto her desk where I could slip a sheet of paper under it. I turned around, let the paper sag in the middle, then pulled the ends, and catapaulted the tick right onto paper teacher was writing on.
Her agitation and revulsion were so extreme I really had trouble keeping a straight face. Fortunately she had no idea who had done it. I'm sure she thought it was a louse.
