It is a technically fun poem that is a great study for prosody, onomatopoeia and so on, and hence has frequently been a standard text for children at school. Southey, if you remember, was Poet Laureate before Wordsworth, and today, unfortunately for his reputation, is considered one of the minor Romantic poets.
