O.Henry mentions the Catawba River, of which I had never before heard. But I remember that we had Catawba grape vines, whose grapes had a distinctive pleasant flavor. I would expect them to be hard to find now. I did find a comercial site about them.
" In the mid-1800's John Michael Meier came to America from Germany and was granted a homestead just north of Cincinnati. On his land he found wild Catawba grapes growing, which were different from any he had known in Germany."

Catawba grapes are still grown in NY fingerlakes, and they make a lovely rosé wine... they are not as 'foxy' flavored as many native grapes. (but they are very sweet-- as is the wine)
