"Ere five minutes had passed the tea was
made, two slices of bacon were frizzling on the pan,
the table was rearranged, the antimacassars
straightened over the sombre brown furniture, and the
whole room had taken a new air of comfort and
neatness. "
A word posted about quite a while ago, but perhaps not yet know to some of our new members. Over a hundred years ago, prior to the slogan "a little dab'll do ya" men apparently poured a half ounce or thereabouts of macassar oil on their scalps to tame their tresses, which threatened to stain the fabric on the chairs. So crafty crones crocheted washable creations to protect the fabric - anti macassars.
macassar oil, like walnut oil is brownish in color, and both are likely to stain anything they touch brown.. (remember in 'Snow White'- the wicked step mother makes Snow White wash with walnut oil, to stain her skin, and leave it less then creamy white. (it didn't work)--(not PC nowdays to prefer 'white skin'--but it is part of the classic story)
Makassar has one of the most beautiful bays I have ever seen. If I knew how to do it, I would post my holiday snaps for you.
