Admiral Denver is going through his old sea chest, and mentions a "midshipman's dirk".As a fun thing, let's see how long a list of names for knives we can think of.
I found "gully" somewhere in Dickens. A lady who had been a missionary in India showed me a gurkha knife and a kreese.
Then there is the Scottish skean dhu. The frontier Bowie knife. French poniard. Mark Twain mentions the Barlow, a popular pocket knife. Mr. Merdle in Little Dorrit cut his jugular with a tortoiseshell penknife. Some additions, please.

Kreese = old anglicisation of Indonesian/Malay kris or keris.

Skean Dhu (or Sgian Dubh). The knife worn in the top of a stocking as part of traditional Scottish highland dress. The name means black (ie:secret) knife.
