what ever happened to the film version of Winchester's The Professor and the Madman? It was supposed to be released in 2001; I haven't heard a thing since, and googling has proved unsatisfactory.

Anyone know anything?

And someone wants to film a man turning his penis into an elongated misshaped thing through compulsive masturbation, whilst fantasising about etymologies? I can see that this will be the new Titanic.

Nah, shanks. That bit would only be referred to occasionally, as comic relief.

My memory () of the book tells me he cut it off. So therefore, wouldn't he be comic sans?

okay, okay -- I'll send a query to Jesse.

in the meantime, here's a chat with Winchester wherein he mentions the movie rights.

I love this line from the Chat:

The two crucial sources were the previously secret files at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum in England, and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington D.C. Plus a lot of U.S. Army records, Civil War records, and the amazing archives at Oxford University Press (which preserve such things as the tail of a mouse found among the dictionary slips -- and filed under the letter T, not M, a matter that offended some linguistic pedants).

They's plenty 2001 references to it. It seems to have since fallen off the face of cyberspace.

No; it's "on hold", or whatever the movie term is. Don't know when or if it will be coming out.

Best,

Jesse

Not to mention reporting that one has asked Jesse Sheidlower if he knows anything.

*LMAO*, Max!

And thanks, tsuwm. If Jesse (ahem) doesn't know "anything", who do?
