"Exampled the behavior..."

I have no problem with "grieve (c.f. "grieving widow)." The other two examples do grate, though.

The grieve problem is in the choice of direct objects. The prescribed dose is "the loss grieved the widow," not "the widow grieved the loss…" "The grieving widow" would seem to fit the latter, but.
