Thank you. I haven't decided whether to do it yet. Depends how much time is involved.

Oh dear, oh dear! I just got a PM--thank you--noting that Bingley's course was not locatable and that the courses cost money, and therefore wasn't I advertising? I am sorry. This is exactly the kind of thing that I got marked down for all through school: rushing through and not being thorough. As far as I know, Bingley has not accepted the offer yet, and frankly I am not even sure whether his involvement will count as a "course" or not; but I only put the link as a means of finding out what Suite 101 is, since I hadn't heard of it. Confess I didn't even read far enough to find out that they charge for their courses. I just thought it was quite an honor that they sought him out. If ANYone else sees my opening post as commercialism, let me know in public or in private, and I'll take the site right off. Again, I am sorry.

Jackie, whoever wrote you that PM didn't think the thing through. You weren't advertising anything. Let's say tomorrow I get a job teaching deconstructionist post-modern narrative at Harvard. You bet I'm gonna tell the world, even though Harvard charges tuition! [sheesh...] http://www.harvard.edu/

Dear Jackie,
Whoever sent you that PM can take over the job of Head Nitpicker. I haven't been terribly happy with Juan's performance in the office lately.
Yours Truly,

Well, it can be hard to tell, sometimes. Thanks, you-all. You really didn't collude, did you? Neat!
Head Nitpicker Vanguard ought to have some good ideas! ;-) I don't think I dare start listing requirements...

Perhaps some clarification is in order. As far as I can make out, and I only found out about Suite 101 when I was approached, there are two parts to Suite 101: an open access part and a feepaying course part.
In the open access part people are appointed as contributing editors. They have to write monthly, fortnightly (which they bizarrely call bi-weekly), or weekly articles on their subject. This is what I would be doing. The woman who is doing this for Ancient Rome is familiar with some articles I've had posted elsewhere on the internet and is very keen for me to take over Ancient Greece, which seems to have fallen by the wayside, as my subject.

I've just come back to the Board after a couple of days. Suite 101 is only semi-commercial. Also agree with Betsy about skiting anyway.

I knew I had been out of it, news-wise, but I thought for sure that I'd've heard about the plotting of an ancient civilization takeover... I didn't even realize that Rome still had a vengence going.
Good thing I joined this group.

The thought of Bingley and his Indonesian Mafia hijacking a time machine somewhere in the backstreets of Jakarta (where the streets are very mean) and haring off back to the days when a spade was an oikedda and Ithaca was only a poxy little dustbowl in Greece to become an absolute dictator just about kills me!

Bingley and his Indonesian Mafia Ohmigawd!! Actually, I thought about Bingley this afternoon: one of the questions at my son's Quick Recall match was what was the technique developed in Indonesia for coloring cloth by pressing wax into it.

Indonesia has a mafia? World events have certainly started to pass me by. This place is better than CNN! "Greater indeed are pleasures that are shared."

Almost any news source is better than CNN.
The Indonesian mafia types are usually referred to as oknum or in their more 'hands-on' manifestations 'preman'. If you're being careful 'pihak tertentu' (certain parties).

That's what I was refering to, dude. In reply to:
Date: Fri Oct 3 00:01:07 EDT 2003 Subject: A.Word.A.Day--batik X-Bonus: He who wishes to secure the good of others has already secured his own. -Confucius (c. 551-479? BC)
batik (buh-TEEK, BAT-ik) noun
1. A technique of dyeing fabrics that involves covering parts of it with wax, dyeing the exposed part and then removing the wax with boiling water.
2. A fabric dyed with this method.
[From Javanese batik (painted).]
"The center, according to her would be used to train children in batik and tie dye making as well as basketry." Rachael Amakye; Gov't Supports Women; Ghanaian Chronicle (Accra, Ghana); Sep 5, 2003.
"The batik cotton dresses she wore were the color of the sun in a child's drawing, and her neighbors could always spot her coming from several blocks away." Kevin Brockmeier; The Brief History of the Dead; New Yorker; Sep 8, 2003.
This week's theme: words originating in Southeast Asian countries.
Have another cup of coffee and a ciggy, sweetie.

For those who are interested, after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing my part of Suite 101 (which has transmogrified from Ancient Greece to Ancient Biographies) is up and if not running, at least going at a brisk walk. http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/ancient_biographiesBingley
