A friend who lives fairly close to the forest fires out west tells me that this is the coined word for the perpetual haze in the air. No replies needed; I just thought it was a neat word that fit the situation.

There is a host of coinages for "smoke plus xxx", starting with smog, then smaze, smizzle, what-have-you.

In Viet Nam, where high water tables precluded the traditional latrine and it was necessary to develop special procedures for waste disposal by burning, there was regularly an unmistakable distinctive presence known as "shmit." Unsavory details upon request, if you need them.

It certainly explains the expression on Jack's face and that little puff over his head

Exactly. I've seen it, never heard it either. It's a bit contrived, as are they all. Another example of "the sequels are never as good as the original" ("smog," in this case)...
