today I'm having a major run on the word clodpate. I don't find it via Google® in the News or (recently) in Groups, so I can't figure what the driver is.

these runs always intrigue me, but I often never learn the source. last week (and continuing) it was plangonologist (collector of dolls), which seemed to relate to arctophile (lover/collector of teddy bears!) being in the news (I have arctophilist, so I wasn't getting many hits on that.)

Maybe it's a flash mob.

Just guessing but:
clod=lump of earth
pate=head
I'm guessing it's not a compliment.

http://onelook.com/?w=clodpate&ls=a

a blockhead

Check it out on onelook.com

Edit: But onelook isn't having a run on the term either.

Edit Two: Ha!!!!!!!!!! Clodpate is now the 'term of the hour' on onelook!

more than just a blockhead, according to some sources; a blockhead AND a clod

>why is clodpate generating all this hubbub?

turns out it was a clue in today's NY Times crossword; I think the answer they wanted is 'lummox'..

a clue in today's NY Times crossword

The today in question was attually® a couple of months ago. Sometimes the Ithaca Yournal has a little code number that translates to the original date, but not yesterday. I think it's a matter of paying big bucks to get it on time. Interesting to know that the IJ isn't the onliest cheapskate.

BTW, thanks for tipping the gaffe, tsuwm

lummox is a lovely word, an insult without the malice. Maybe it sounds less vituperitive because it lacks the hissing &/or hard stops of other words with similar meanings. Clodpate, idiot, stupid. They all sound much harsher to the physical ear and therefore to my mental ear.

I agree, Zed. Lummox has such a lovable oaf sound to it. "C'mere, you great lummox." However, what's X but a combo hissing/hard stop?

I, also, agree. I also use "lug" in that context.
