In addition to the extra batteries, flashlight, and water in the car - for winter in those very cold winter areas - an extra coat or blanket, hat, gloves/mittens. Maybe some kitty litter for getting stuck in the snow. I believe we should all carry jumper cables, too. When I was young and lived in Northern Ohio, stuff like this was truly necessary. If I lived in Buffalo, you can bet I'd have it all still!!
