from the NYTimes today, discussing Dartmouth College's email program, Blitzmail: The program has become so ingrained on the campus that the word "blitz" can be used as a noun, a verb and an imperative.
" 'I'll blitz you this,' or, 'Please blitz me that,' " said John Winn, a professor of chemistry at Dartmouth. "It's changed the way people talk."here's the url: http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/14/technology/circuits/14blit.html

"It's changed the way people talk."
What "changed the way people talk"? It's redefined one lousy word a little. And only a little.
"Changed the way people talk". Harrumph!®

What else did you expect from a chemistry professor on social intercourse?

You're right, Dr. Bill. I'm easily confused.

On the other hand, perhaps he meant that Blitzmail has completely replaced the phone call as a means of communication.

(This is completely unrelated, but eta's post reminded me of something I've been meaning to put for a while now, and I'm in a hurry this morning.) A couple of weeks ago, to my delight, the Travel Channel on cable television broadcast a tour of New Zealand, wherein Prime Minister Helen Clark personally conducted the show's host to various places. At one point I was puzzled to hear her tell him, "You'll need a nice ex". Then I realized they were standing on a glacier.

Why can't one word "change the way people talk"? It makes a difference, alright? On the other hand, I'm always surprised how lightly people talk about today's "faster pace of change" or similar expressions, without ever specifying how this is measured..

How about 'text messaging lingo' as a measure of the 'speed of change' [i.e. text truncation in inverse proportion to the speed of communication]:
"Cell phones, the World Wide Web, IM, email and SMS text messaging has created a language of it's own, much to the distaste of many teachers, parents and employers! But regardless of how we may feel about the new lingo, it's here to stay, so we may as well all understand what it means and how to use the abbreviations and emoticons - and I guess it does save time, especially for those who don't touch type or have to struggle with tiny cell phone keypad buttons ;0)."
