skulk - my dictionary doesn't support this, but I have seen etymology given as derived from Germanic "scalk" meaning a slave or servant. A "marshal" was the "mare servant" = in charge of the horses. The seneschal is the most senior servant.
So, to "skulk" meant to be unobtrusive, as servant's infereior status demands.
